  18.      Please enter a name or a handle (``ident"), such as ``Smith"
  19.      or ``SRI-NIC".  Starting with a period forces a name-only
  20.      search; starting with exclamation point forces handle-only.
  21.      Examples:
  22.           Smith               [looks for name or handle SMITH    ]
  23.           !SRI-NIC            [looks for handle SRI-NIC only     ]
  24.           .Smith, John        [looks for name JOHN SMITH only    ]
  25.      Adding ``..." to the argument will match anything from that
  26.      point, e.g. ``ZU..." will match ZUL, ZUM, etc.

  30.      record, use an asterisk character `*' directly preceding the
